OUR WORK

Guy Evans Architects is an architecture and interior design practice based in Otautahi Christchurch. We are also an NZIA Practice.

Our project work is located throughout Aotearoa New Zealand within a variety of contexts that present unique challenges for our team to tackle with passion and commitment to our clients.

We are primarily focused on residential dwellings from single family houses to apartments and townhouses.

We also have a broad experience in a range of commercial building types and their associated interior design.

Current projects include new houses in Fendalton and Waimairi Beach, additions to houses in Sumner and Remuera, a four-storey alteration in Mt Victoria and the repurposing of decommissioned water tanks in Seatoun into a Brutalist concrete bolthole!

We tailor our services to suite each project. This enables us to optimize the value we bring to all our clients.

Our strong relationships with other key consultants and the building industry as a whole is vital and enables great team work throughout our projects.

There has never been a more challenging time than now for our industry.

We see this as a tremendous opportunity to make a difference.

Our creativity is well balanced with a pragmatic underlay. This allows our early investigations and feasibility studies to maximize the potential of a site while allowing our clients appropriate buffer with clear communications around the project road ahead.

Our wide ranging experience is laser focused on the jobs at hand.

We love problem solving and understand what good design can bring to our clients.

Our design process aims to distill the essence of the problem.

This transforms the project into something that is more than just a functional building.

It will have a refined elegance that will stand the test of time.

PREVIOUS WORK

Prior to establishing Guy Evans Architects, I worked at Warren and Mahoney Architects in Christchurch.

My role was to lead and design a variety of projects over six years.

The projects included: Two new apartment complexes - including the award winning 26 Salisbury Street, the rehabilitation of two apartment complexes damaged in the earthquakes and a range of private residential projects.

Commercial work included the development of two car dealerships for Miles Toyota and Cockram Nissan, and the initial masterplan for Lincoln Hub - integrating Lincoln University with the Crown's agricultural research facilities.

I also worked closely with the Anglican Church Property Trustees in their Earthquake Recovery. It was tremendously rewarding to understand individual community requirements, being innovative and creative with limited insurance coffers to resuscitate these anchor buildings in neighbourhoods across Canterbury to make them more resilient and sustainable.

An example of this work is the All Souls Church, chapel and community facilities on Church Lane in Merivale which has been recognized in both the NZIA Architecture Awards and the Master Builders Commercial Project Awards.

Another example is the design of a new office building and hall facilities for St Johns Latimer Square that compliment and form a campus with Shigeru Ban's Cardboard Cathedral (only the first stage of two is currently built).

EDUCATION AND EARLY INFLUENCE

After graduating Victoria University of Wellington School of Architecture I moved to the United States where I practiced in New York within the acclaimed offices of

I. M. Pei and his sons, renowned for their modernization of The Louvre,

and Thomas Phifer and Partners who create ultra modern houses and commercial developments.

I also worked with Murphy Burnham & Buttrick Architects who are renowned for their beautifully designed schools and loft apartments.

My learnings stem from being embedded within numerous commercial, institutional and residential projects including the headquarters for the Bank of China in Beijing, a museum in Berlin, a hotel in San Diego, houses Upstate New York and on Fire Island, a restaurant in Soho, a bar in Alphabet City and a school overlooking Central Park in Manhattan.

I have highlighted some of these projects in the Portfolio section above.

OUTSIDE PRACTICE

I judge the Registered Master Builders House of the Year and Commercial Project Award competitions awarding excellence in design and construction across New Zealand.

For five years I presented the award winners on an annual 'Grand Designs' styled television programme called - House of the Year.
The overall experience gained in these competitions confirms my belief that good communication across the project team between clients, architects and builders is paramount to creating a successfully built outcome.

Outside the profession I enjoy life with family and friends especially if we are watching a game of cricket together at the Basin Reserve, Hagley Park or playing it on a beach or backyard, skiing in the Southern Alps, supporting the All Blacks or going to a concert together.
